“So, I’m calling him Superman,” Star confided to Jayne over her second glass of chardonnay. “Because he’s faster than a speeding bullet.”

“No sequel, eh?” Jayne managed after a pronounced bout of laughter that had drawn the attention of the dinner crowd at Spago. Jayne had wanted to take Star out to congratulate her on her first cover, and Spago was the place to see and be seen. It was kind of a debut. Jayne had even seen to it that the magazine got Star a new outfit for the evening and the full Skip and Billy. “Just a little perk,” she’d explained to Star.

The Spago Garden was dominated by hundred-year-old olive trees that had been flown in from Greece. Brushed by a cool ocean breeze, the trees stirred gently, as Tivoli lights, wound into the olive boughs, twinkled overhead. As they sat surrounded by the rich and famous in the garden, Star felt as if she’d snuck in and was going to be found out and asked to leave at any minute. She felt as out of place as one of those olive trees.

“So, what are your plans?” Jayne asked, trying to capture linguini gracefully on her fork.

“I don’t know exactly.” Star shrugged. “I’ve got a place to stay for a bit, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten.”

“Then you do want to stay on and try to make a go of it here?” Jayne asked, giving up on grace and hoping for the best with a bite of her pasta.

“Yeah.” Star nodded thoughtfully, spearing one of her cheese-filled pumpkin ravioli. “It just seems like too good an opportunity to waste.”

“I think you’re right. I can tell you there’s plenty of excitement over your debut on the cover.”

“Everyone keeps saying that, but no one has seen the cover yet,” Star said, thinking that with Jayne she might get to the bottom of the mystery.

“No one except the people I’ve shown it to.”

“Jayne,” Star said with a tone of excitement and accusation. “You didn’t. Who?”

“Well,” Jayne said as if trying to remember, “the folks at LADA, who want to see you in their offices on the lot to read for a guest shot on the show.” She pressed a card into Star’s hand.

“LADA!” Star exclaimed, fighting unsuccessfully for control and once again drawing the attention of those around her. “That’s one of my favorite shows. You got me an audition?”

“I showed the casting director your picture,” Jayne said firmly. “You got the audition.”

“Oh, Jayne,” Star gushed. “I just can’t believe it. Oh my God. What’ll I do? I’ve never auditioned for anything before. I’m not an actress.”

“And how many magazine covers did you shoot before this one?” Jayne grinned devilishly.

“Well, none.”

“Exactly. And it’s already getting you noticed and it’s not even out yet.”

“I guess,” Star agreed, grinning shyly, but proud of herself. “But they’re going to expect me to, like, move and stuff.”

The rest of the dinner had been Jayne taking time to give Star some advice about the audition, but really about succeeding in Los Angeles; what it took and what it cost.
